Maritimeprofessionals.net was launched in March 2017 as an online media with an innovative new approach to sharing of relevant information in the global maritime business.
The maritime business is a traditional and conservative business. The roots of the business go hundreds of years back and some organizations are still running their business in the same way that they did 50 years ago. However, the maritime business is facing digitalization and disruption like all other businesses and new technologies and processes are implemented on a daily base.
The glue of the business 20 years ago, was newspapers; delivering news, information about events, job advertisements and offering opportunities for advertising.
With the popularity of the internet increasing every year, the printed media started to be seriously challenged after the financial crisis in 2007 due to price competitive online alternatives. The economic fundament of the printed media use to be advertising, primarily traditional advertisements and job advertisements.
Jakob le Fevre, the founder of MARPRO was part of the first wave of digitization in 2010 with the introduction of the highly ambitious online maritime job board, JOB2SEA. In only three years Jakob le Fevre took it from 0 to 75.000 visits per month with approx. 2.000 job advertisements per month.
In March 2017, the privately-owned company MARPRO launched the online portal www.maritimeprofessionals.net
with the aim of building a user-friendly service for the maritime business. The website was built with an integrated job board, a freelancer directory, a company directory, an event calendar and a news section.
One of the most groundbreaking parts of the concept, is the fact that registration for users is entirely free and all basic listings like a job ad, a freelancer profile, a company profile and an event listing is 100% free.
Another important part of the concept is the very close integration with main Social Media channels. Once a user has uploaded a job ad, it automatically almost instantly is shared to a social media universe of +75.000 members/followers.
Even though the website was launched in 2017, it marks 10 years online.
The LinkedIn group Maritime Professionals was launched in 2007 and have now around 40.000 members. Some years later, the LinkedIn group Maritime Deck Officers was introduced and this group now have close to 20.000 members.
This is probably the reason, why the portal in very short time have attracted a major number of maritime profiles. As seen from the graphic from Google Analytics, the portal has since March attracted 21.000 unique visitors who have visited the site 30.000 times. What is equally important is that the users spend in average 2:20 min. at the site, which proves that the services are popular.
The traffic to the website increases every month, with a substantial rate – 13.000 have visited during the last 30 days.
Jakob le Fevre explains the concept “A surprising fact is that our biggest challenge is to explain to people that the basic listings are free, there is no strings attached and we do not ask for your credit card details. People thinks this is too good to be true, but they forget that all major successful online concepts have started this way. Think about LinkedIn, Facebook, Google and YouTube e.g., they give a lot away for free too.
We sell services too, all listings can be upgraded to Premium listings, with logo, link, pictures and video – and we sell sponsored news stories and banner advertising too. We just think that to grow big, you need to give a lot away for free”.
MARPRO have just published a guide that shows how easy it is to upload a complete free job ad and explains the range of services you have at hand as a company user.
